Zandvoort Masters 1999:
The Marlboro Masters of Formula 3
Denmark's Kristian Kolby had a
disappointing race in his Dallara and finished in 7th place, 1 second down on 6th place
and more than 14 seconds down on the race winner. Kolby drives for Tom Walkinshaw's Arrows
junior team in the English F 3 championship.
Another Dutch driver was 31 year
old Walter van Lent, one of the oldest contestants in the field. Van Lent finished in a
creditable 6th place (he also started from 6th place and qualified as fastest Dutch
driver). Van Lent is not looking for a F 3000 or F 1 career, but aims at a good saloon car
racing seat for next year.
Jenson Button from Great Britain
had to carve his way up through the field, ultimately finishing in 5th place. On the
picture he's passing Sebastien Bourdais from France, the best placed Martini driver who
crossed the finish line in 10th place. Bourdais had been as high up as 4th place during
the early stages of the race, but apparently had some problems causing him to drop back.
Almost all entered cars were
built by Italian manufacturer Dallara, who is the main chassis constructor in this class
after the withdrawal of Ralt and Reynard. The only competition for Dallara in the Masters
came from French constructor Martini. Martini has been a force in the French F 3
championship since the early seventies and has also had some international successes over
the years. This constructor has also built F 2 and F 1 cars and was one of the dominant
manufacturers in the Formula Renault series.
This year only 3 Martinis (type MK79) were entered in the Masters and all cars finished.
Bourdais finished 10th as said, his teammate Schroeder a disappointing 22nd and Japanese
driver Fukuda, also piloting a MK79, followed Bourdais home and took 11th place.
