Zandvoort Masters 1999:
The Marlboro Masters of Formula 3
The main event on Sunday was of course the Masters of Formula 3 race. This
year's was one of the better races of the last couple of years, though close and
spectacular racing was only seen midfield. The circuit was damp but it didn't rain or
drizzle for the whole race.
On the picture you see the top three finishers, Marc Hynes, Thomas Mutsch and Etienne van
de Linde, already leading the field in one the first laps. The bright red car behind them
is fourth place finisher Christijan Albers, trailing Sebastien Bourdais in the first few
laps.
Denmark's Kristian Kolby in the white and red car leading the mid-field
through a bend early in the race. The top four drivers had already created a small gap to
their pursuers.

This sequence shows the predicament of Italian Gianluca Calcagni (#19) in his Dallara on the first lap. Calcagni slided sideways into a bend and was pushed out of it by the cars behind him. All involved drivers were able to continue the race except for Calcagni, who was left stranded in the gravel trap. Calcagni didn't even finish one race lap, that must have been very disappointing for him.
Another driver sliding into
a gravel trap was Austrian Robert Lechner. He did it 2 laps later in the same bend as
Calcagni but without the "help" of other drivers.
Lechner had to be pulled out
of the gravel trap by the marshals, just like Calcagni. Here you see him waiting by his
car, hands in his side, while the marshals are planning how to get his car out without
causing a dangerous situation on the track.
